The Art Show
My grandson , age 8, lives in White Plains, New York. Told that he had a picture in an upcoming White Plains School Community Art Show, of course I had to go. I was astounded by the level of art (and the instruction) that was contained in three large rooms. - kindergarten to twelth grade! It was not in order according to grade, nor was all sculpture or painting displayed separately, but was intermingled -
A 12th grader's self portrait in pencil next to a 5th grader's collage.
A painting of a madonna, child and sheep in oils, but one ear of the mother, one ear of the sheep, fingers and toes were ceramic.
There was abstract,
There was detailed still life.
Self portraits
Grotesques.
finger painting.
And what was most wonderful was the seriousness and care that the White Plains School district takes ART. And shows it. And, as I was told, MUSIC.
There was no hint in that kindergarten to 12th grade show that our country's schools often cut the arts first when money is scarce. Great.
